Surrey Arts Wardrobe is a busy costume hire department where no two days are the same. If you would like to get involved with what we do we have a couple of different options. Work experience placements are offered for those in full time eduction from GCSE to degree level, for a fixed amount of time.
We also have a wonderful team of volunteers who usually work with us over a longer time period, but for one day a week to fit around their own commitments and daily lives.

See below for placements, roles and details of how to apply. If you have any questions about either of the ways to help out, please do not hesitate to get in contact.

Volunteering

Surrey Arts Wardrobe volunteers are considered valuable team members and contribute a great deal to the running of the Wardrobe. Duties vary from assiting in client appointments and events around the county to maintaining, ironing, repairing and returning costumes to the rails. Volunteers support us with their time, skills and experience and add to the warm and friendly atmosphere of the Wardrobe.

If you would like to get involved with what we do we are looking for the volunteers to undertake these specific roles:

  • Volunteer Wardrobe Assistant
  • Volunteer insect pest monitor
  • Volunteer sewing and repairs assistant
  • Volunteer wig maintenance/stylist
  • Volunteer cobbler/shoe repairs
  • Event volunteers

But... you are by no means limited by these job roles! If you have a skill you think would be of interest to us, please let us know!

How to apply

To apply as a volunteer, please complete an expression of interest form and return it to us by email or post.

Work placements

The Wardrobe can provide opportunities for young people in full time education to gain an insight into the world of work and, more specifically, the costume and theatre industries. We offer a limited number of work placements each year and aim to give students the best experience we can while they are with us.

The tasks undertaken on a placement will vary depending on what you are looking to get out of the placement, what is happening in the Wardrobe while you are here and your specific skills, abilities and interests but can range from costume repairs and maintenance to assisting with client appointments or helping us at events.

We generally work with students for one to two weeks, depending on the school's specifications. For those in higher or further education we can offer placements of a more flexible length and structure according to individual requirements but usually recommend 4-12 weeks to allow both us and you to get the best out of your time.

How to apply

To apply for a work placement please complete the application form and return it to us by email or post.

We do not require pre-placement interviews for students in compulsory education. However, if you are in further or higher education we will invite you to an informal pre-placement interview to discuss what you are looking to get from the placement.

Please apply at least one month prior to the date you would like your placement to start to allow us time to prep and be aware that we do get booked up quite quickly, especially at certain times of year where schools are doing work experience at the same time. We have limited capacity for taking on students and rarely take more than one student in the same week.
